{"id":229,"date":"2011-07-13T10:05:48","date_gmt":"2011-07-13T14:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/?p=229"},"modified":"2011-07-13T10:05:48","modified_gmt":"2011-07-13T14:05:48","slug":"netbooks-and-kde-network-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/?p=229","title":{"rendered":"Netbooks and KDE network manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently running an ASUS eeePC 1201n netbook\/laptop.\u00a0 It has a 12&#8243; screen and a full sized keyboard;\u00a0 sort of on the border between a netbook and a laptop.\u00a0 It&#8217;s small enough to carry around comfortably and large enough to see and type.\u00a0 I tried running openSUSE with KDE on it, but KDE has a <strong>major<\/strong> problem with the network manager.\u00a0 It cannot connect to a wireless station with a hidden SSID.\u00a0\u00a0 <a title=\"Bug 209464\" href=\"https:\/\/bugs.kde.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=209464\" target=\"_blank\">Bug 209464<\/a> has been open on KDE since October 2009 and still marked <strong>NEW<\/strong> with priority <strong>HI<\/strong> and severity <strong>NORMAL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My wireless station is not broadcasting the SSID and is using WPA\/WPA2\u00a0 personal with a pre-shared key.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not about to change that. There is no point in broadcasting the SSID and letting the neighborhood know that wireless access is available to anyone with a good key cracker.<\/p>\n<p>There are some workarounds which I&#8217;ve tried with limited success.\u00a0 The Gnome network manager works fine.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also tried LXDE and Enlightenment successfully.\u00a0 Come on KDE, that bug has been open over a year and a half.\u00a0 If Gnome and the others can do it, look at their code and <strong>fix it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I started out with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on the netbook.\u00a0 Once I got the screen set up with a short panel on the bottom containing links to my most used programs and everything else in the top panel, it was very usable.\u00a0 Both panels auto-hide to give me more room on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>I made the mistake of allowing it to upgrade to 10.10 and then 11.04.\u00a0 The Unity layout is OK, but not as good as my original layout.\u00a0 However, after a few updates, I started having problems with the system.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know whether that was a result of the multiple distribution upgrades\u00a0 or just a problem with 11.04.\u00a0 So I wiped the system and went back to 10.04 LTS.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong>I&#8217;ll probably stay there for the remainder of the netbook&#8217;s lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>I have a test system with a wireless PCI adapter that I&#8217;ve been trying other distributions.\u00a0 I tried LXDE and liked it, but couldn&#8217;t get the desktop background to cycle through a number of my pictures.\u00a0 That&#8217;s something I have on all my other systems, both openSUSE 11.3&#8211;KDE and Ubuntu 10.04&#8211;Gnome.\u00a0 Then I tried <a title=\"Bhodi Linux\" href=\"http:\/\/bhodilinux.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bhodi Linux<\/a> with the Enlightenment desktop.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very impressive.\u00a0 I think that my next netbook\/laptop will run Bhodi Linux.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently running an ASUS eeePC 1201n netbook\/laptop.\u00a0 It has a 12&#8243; screen and a full sized keyboard;\u00a0 sort of on the border between a netbook and a laptop.\u00a0 It&#8217;s small enough to carry around comfortably and large enough to &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/?p=229\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-229","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-linux","category-netbook"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/229","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=229"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/229\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":231,"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/229\/revisions\/231"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=229"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=229"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bobsown.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=229"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
